If I could only give one gift to a child this age, it would be a set of magnetic tiles. They aren't the most sustainable thing in this guide, but nothing else in our house has lasted as long.

A marble run has been our other long-hauler. My son got his first set at 3 and was every bit as into it at 8, moving from simple runs to elaborate towers as he grew. The play couch: a big gift that gets used every day
A play couch is a set of foam cushions kids rebuild into forts, tunnels, slides and stages. It's a big gift in size and price, but it doubles as seating, and once it's in the house it tends to get used every single day. These two sit at very different price points.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 means every thread and button in a fabric was tested for harmful substances (OEKO-TEX). A play couch is still polyurethane foam, though. The honest drawbacks
Big gifts need big space. Climbers, walls, play couches and dollhouses take up floor or wall space for good. Measure first, and figure out how anything wall-mounted gets anchored before you order.
Foam is still foam. CertiPUR-US and OEKO-TEX tell you what a play couch was tested for. They don't make it plastic-free. The daily use wins it for me, but you may see it differently.
Magnetic tiles are plastic. I've made my case for them on how long they last, but if you're aiming for a plastic-free playroom, they won't fit.
Some of these top out at 5. The climber and the scooter are better for 4s and young 5s. Check the age on the box against the child you're buying for.
What to look for in a gift for this age
- Know what a label actually covers. FSC is about how the forest was managed, not about paints or finishes (FSC). GOTS is for organic textiles, OEKO-TEX means a fabric was tested for harmful substances, and CertiPUR-US is for foam.
- Go easy on soft plastics. A 2021 modelling study in Environment International identified 126 chemicals of concern in plastic toy materials and estimated the highest risk from plasticizers in soft plastics (Aurisano et al., 2021). It's an estimate from exposure models rather than a test of any particular toy, but it's one more reason I lean toward wood, wool and cotton.
- Think about the little siblings. Small parts are banned in toys for kids under 3, and toys with small parts need a choking warning (CPSC). If there's a toddler in the house, keep an eye on peg dolls, puppets and bath-bomb surprises.
- Pick the toy that will still be out next year. In our house, that's always been the open-ended ones.
